A Tradition Steeped in History

Today, Shinboku continues to thrive, guided by the principles of Shotokan karate and the teachings of our predecessors. We are proud of our history and are committed to preserving and promoting the art of karate for future generations.

SHINBOKU is a 3rd generation, community-owned Karate club, tracing its history back to the founder of Karate.

Founded in 1988 by British Karate Senseis Shaun & Andy Kisby, Rob Tyler, and Mark Nightingale, Shinboku was established to cultivate a community deeply rooted in the discipline and philosophy of traditional Karate.

"The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants."

MASTER GICHIN FUNAKOSHI

The "father” of modern karate

Gichin Funakoshi, a revered figure in the world of martial arts, is credited with introducing and popularising Karate on the Japanese mainland. Born in Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate, Funakoshi dedicated his life to the study and propagation of this ancient art. His philosophy transcended mere physical techniques; he believed in the holistic development of character through Karate. Under his guidance, Karate transformed from a local Okinawan practice to a global phenomenon. His legacy continues to inspire martial artists around the world, emphasising respect, discipline, and the pursuit of self-improvement.

  • Graham Fisher (6th Dan)

Renshi Graham Fisher's martial arts journey began at Peterborough Technical College's Judo Club, where he laid a strong foundation in martial arts and earned his green belt in Judo. In the 1980s, while working at British Sugar, he discovered karate and joined the British Sugar Karate Club under Alan Butcher. His commitment and enthusiasm saw him rise to 2nd kyu.

Reigniting his karate passion years later, he returned, following instructor Shaun Kisby to the Shinboku Club. Under the guidance of Kisby and Charles Mac, he achieved his 1st Dan in 1999 and has since progressed to a 6th Dan.

Now at 64, Renshi Fisher's karate career is a testament to his unwavering dedication and resilience. He continues to be a source of inspiration to students, embodying a lifelong commitment to and love for the art of karate.
